A Brief Look

The Department of Periodontics is situated on the ground floor of the main college building. The department deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the supporting structures of the teeth. Apart from procedures aimed at maintaining gum health, the specialists routinely perform cosmetic periodontal procedures such as tissue reduction and tissue grafts to improve the esthetics of patients. Moreover, every patient is motivated and educated to maintain good oral hygiene.

Infrastructure & Facilities

Spread at an area of 5905.7 sq.ft and located on the ground floor of the main college building, the Department of Periodontics consists of an Undergraduate section and a Postgraduate section, a spacious Reception area, separate Clinical area for each section, Professor, Reader and Lecturer rooms, PG Common room with locker facilities, a Seminar room with Department Library, a counselling area, fully equipped Minor OT for various periodontal surgical procedures and a separate area for sterilization and disinfection of instruments. The department is well equipped with 41 dental chair units and latest audio visual facilities. The department is also wi-fi enabled and allows free internet access.

Undergraduate Programme

The Undergraduate (BDS) program in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Implantology started in the year 2009. The academic curriculum is covered in the third and final year through didactic lectures and clinical posting.

At the end of the BDS course the graduate is expected to –

  • Diagnose the patient’s periodontal problem
  • Plan and perform appropriate periodontal treatment
  • Be competent to educate and motivate the patient
  • Be competent to perform thorough oral prophylaxis, sub gingival scaling, root planing and minor periodontal surgical procedures

Postgraduate Programme

The Postgraduate (MDS) program started in the year 2014 with 2 seats. The academic curriculum includes a dissertation, Library dissertation, departmental and interdepartmental seminar presentations and journal club. The department aims in imparting quality education and training in various periodontal procedures inclusive of both non surgical and surgical. The postgraduates are also imparted training on implants during the course period. They are encouraged to involve themselves in various research activities.

At the end of the MDS course, the postgraduate is expected to –

  • Describe etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of common periodontal diseases with emphasis on Indian population.
  • Describe various preventive periodontal measures
  • Describe various treatment modalities of periodontal disease from historical aspect to currently available ones.
  • Describe interrelationship between periodontal disease and various systemic conditions
  • Decide regarding non-surgical or surgical management of the case and perform it successfully
  • Shall develop knowledge, skill in the science and practice of Oral Implantology
  • Shall develop teaching skill in the field of Periodontology and Oral Implantology
