A Brief Look

The Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is situated on the second floor of the main college building. The department deals with the diagnosis, prevention, interception and treatment of all forms of malocclusion of the teeth including other dentofacial deformities. The department not only focus on dental displacement but also deals with the control and modification of facial growth thus achieving good aesthetic results and improving the general appearance of patient’s teeth.

Infrastructure & Facilities

Spread at an area of 6659 sq.ft and located on the second floor of the main college building, the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics consists of an Undergraduate section and a Postgraduate section, a spacious Reception area, separate Clinical area for each section, well equipped Undergraduate and Postgraduate labs, Professor, Reader and Lecturer rooms, a Seminar room with Department Library, PG Common Room with locker facilities, Cleft Unit, Record Room, store and a Photography room. The department is well equipped with 27 dental chair units, a laboratory, audio visual aids for explaining treatment strategies to the patients and all other equipments and materials required for various treatment purposes. The department is also wi-fi enabled and allows free internet access.

Undergraduate Programme

The Undergraduate (BDS) program in the department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics started in the year 2007. The academic curriculum is covered in the third and final year through didactic lectures, pre-clinical work and clinical posting.

At the end of the BDS course the graduate is expected to –

  • Understand about normal growth and development of facial skeleton and dentition
  • Diagnose the various categories of malocclusion and plan necessary treatment
  • Plan and execute preventive orthodontics Eg. Space maintainers
  • Plan and execute interceptive orthodontics Eg. Habit breaking appliances
  • Manage treatment of simple malocclusion such as anterior spacing using removable appliances
  • Activate removable orthodontic appliances

Postgraduate Programme

The Postgraduate (MDS) program started in the year 2014 with 3 seats. The department aims to train the postgraduate students to be proficient in the clinical specialty of Orthodontics. The academic curriculum includes a dissertation, Library dissertation, departmental and interdepartmental seminar presentations, journal club, Pre-clinical work and Clinical training.

At the end of the MDS course the postgraduate is expected to –

  • Obtain proper clinical history, methodical examination of the patient, perform essential diagnostic procedures, and interpret them and arrive at a reasonable diagnosis about the dentofacial deformities.
  • Be competent to fabricate and manage the most appropriate appliance – intra or extra oral removable or fixed, mechanical or functional and active or passive for the treatment of any orthodontic problem to be treated singly or as a part of multidisciplinary treatment of orofacial deformities.
