Spread at an area of 6660 sq.ft and located on the third floor of the main college building, the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is uniquely designed and consist of a postgraduate section and state-of-the-art laboratories. The postgraduate section consists of a spacious Reception area, Postgraduate clinic, a Research Section, a seminar room with audio visual facilities, Department library, Professor, Reader and Lecturer rooms, Cubicle type Postgraduate work stations with locker facilities, Record room, Museum and a separate area for sterilization and disinfection of instruments. The department has 09 high end dental chair units. The department is also wi-fi enabled and allows free internet access.
There is a spacious well-equipped undergraduate Dental Anatomy and Oral Pathology Lab for demonstrations, carving and practical classes of 1st and 3rd year BDS students.
The department is the proud owner of Olympus Pentahead Microscope (BX43) with Photomicrography attachment and Image Analysis Software, Olympus Research Microscope with Phase Contrast, Dark Field and Polarizing attachments along with another Image Analysis Software and Camera attachment and Stereo Microscope.
The Histopathology Laboratory provides a comprehensive diagnostic service for a wide range of biopsy and cytology submissions from the college and also from private practitioners. In addition, we perform special histochemical stains, hematology, bio-chemical analysis, microbiological examination and immunohistochemistry. Moreover, the Histopathology Laboratory is a well-equipped facility, which can meet researchers’ requirements in all areas of histotechnology.
KIDS also is the first dental college of Odisha to set up an Immunohistochemistry Laboratory under the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology.
The laboratory is open from 9.00am-4.00pm from Monday to Saturday and is staffed by a experienced technicians, with reports provided by qualified oral pathologists.
The Undergraduate (BDS) program in the department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology started in the year 2007. The academic curriculum under Dental Anatomy & Oral Histology is covered in the first year and Oral Pathology in the third year through didactic lectures, practical classes and demonstrations.
At the end of the BDS course the graduate is expected to –
- Learn about the normal development, morphology, structure and functions of oral tissues and variations in different pathological / non-pathological states
- Understand the histological basis of various dental treatment procedures
- Have knowledge of the physiologic ageing process in the dental tissues
- Perform microscopic study of the histology of oral tissues
- Perform microscopic study of common lesions affecting oral tissues
- Learn about teeth anomalies / polymorphisms through tooth specimens and plaster casts
- Understand the different types of pathological processes that involve the oral cavity and head and neck region
- Learn about the manifestations of common diseases, their diagnosis and correlation with clinical pathological processes.
- Have knowledge of the oral manifestations of systemic diseases
- Understand underlying biological principles governing treatment of oral diseases
- Learn about the basic aspects of Forensic Odontology
The Postgraduate (MDS) program started in the year 2014 with 2 seats. The academic curriculum includes a Library dissertation, departmental and interdepartmental seminar and case presentations, Clinico-pathological meetings, Inter-departmental postings, journal club, Pre-clinical work, Clinical training and training in Laboratory techniques and diagnosis. An original research project in the form of dissertation is part of the requirement for the degree.
At the end of the MDS course the postgraduate is expected to –
- Have a higher competence in both general and special pathology dealing with the nature of oral diseases, their causes, processes and effects.
- Perform routine histopathological evaluation of specimens relating to oral and perioral tissues and carry out routine diagnostic procedures including hematological, cytological, immunological and ultra structural investigations.
- Have an understanding of current research methodology, collection and interpretation of data, ability to carry out research projects on clinical and or epidemiological aspects.
