To commemorate National Doctor’s Day. NSS unit Dental Sciences, KIIT Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar, organized various programs and activities on 1st July, 2024, to observe National Doctor’s Day.
Every year on July 1st, India celebrates National Doctors’ Day to recognize the invaluable contributions of doctors to society. This day serves as a reminder of the selfless service and dedication of medical professionals who work tirelessly to ensure the nation’s health and well-being. National Doctors’ Day acknowledges the critical role doctors play in society, from providing routine medical care to responding to emergencies. Since 1991, this day has been celebrated on July 1st in India to honor the birth and death anniversary of the renowned physician Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. Dr. Roy, who was also the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, is remembered for his contributions to the medical field and his commitment to the welfare of the people.
Dentists, as integral members of the medical community, contribute significantly to the overall health and well-being of individuals by preventing, diagnosing, and treating oral health issues. Their work not only prevents dental issues but also has a profound impact on overall well-being, making their contributions invaluable to the healthcare system.
The NSS KIDS organized several activities and programs to celebrate National Doctors’ Day, focusing on promoting both oral and general health awareness. The key initiatives included:
- Free Blood Pressure Checkup: Free blood pressure checkups were provided to attendees, emphasizing the importance of cardiovascular health and its connection to overall well-being. Participants were educated about the significance of regular blood pressure monitoring and the relationship between oral health and conditions like hypertension. They were Encouraged to adopt healthy lifestyle habits and preventive measures to maintain both their oral and general health.
- Oral Health Information: Pamphlets were distributed, highlighting the importance of oral hygiene and how it impacts overall health. The pamphlets included tips on maintaining a balanced diet, the importance of regular dental checkups, and avoiding harmful habits like smoking and excessive sugar consumption. Advice on preventive care, such as proper brushing and flossing techniques, the benefits of fluoride, and the role of a healthy diet in maintaining strong teeth and gums, were also given.
- Tooth Brushing techniques: Demonstrations were conducted to teach participants the correct tooth brushing techniques, ensuring effective plaque removal and gum health. Attendees had the opportunity to practice brushing techniques under the guidance of dental professionals, using models to simulate proper brushing angles and motions. The importance of using the right toothbrush and toothpaste, the benefits of fluoride, and the need to replace toothbrushes regularly to maintain optimal oral hygiene were also advised.
By incorporating practical health screenings, educational materials, and interactive sessions, the Department of Public Health Dentistry sought to promote a comprehensive understanding of oral health ad general health within the community and emphasize the importance of doctors.
