Oral Health Meets Karate Excellence: KIDS Brings Free Dental Screening to the 2nd All India JKAWF Karate Championship 2026

Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences | In association with the Indian Dental Association (IDA)

When nearly 600 of the country’s finest karatekas gathered at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar on 6th and 7th June 2026 for the 2nd All India JKAWF India Karate Championship, part of the JKAWF India Annual Summer Camp 2026, the Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS) was there too, ensuring that every athlete’s smile was as competition-ready as their technique.

In a unique convergence of sport and healthcare, KIDS, in association with the Indian Dental Association (IDA), conducted a free Oral Health Screening and Dental Assessment camp across both days of the championship, bringing specialized sports dentistry care directly to one of India’s premier karate events.

A National Stage for Karate Excellence

Held at KIIT University, the championship drew approximately 600 participants from across India, cheered on by close to 500 spectators representing 13 states. The inaugural session was presided over by Mr. Asit Kumar Tripathi, former Chief Secretary, Government of Odisha, as Chief Guest, alongside Mr. Sanjib Panda, ADG Police (IPS), as Guest of Honour.

Adding international prestige to the occasion was Sensei Satoshi Takahashi (7th Dan), Guest Instructor from the Japan Karate Association Headquarters, who served as Chief Judge of the tournament. The event also saw the presence of several senior figures from JKAWF India, including Mr. Anil Sinha (Founder Member, JKA Karate India and Chairman, Technical Committee, JKAWF), Mr. Somnath Pal Choudhary (Chairman, JKAWF India), Mr. Sona Ghosh (Secretary, JKAWF India), Mr. Dharmanshu Pandey (Secretary, JKAWF India, Odisha Chapter), and Mr. Gyana Ranjan Mohanty (Registrar, KIIT University).

Where Sports Medicine Meets Dentistry

While the spotlight stayed on the championship bouts, a quieter but equally meaningful initiative was underway on the sidelines. A dedicated team of 11 dentists and 2 non-teaching staff from KIDS worked across both days of the event, offering on-the-spot oral health screenings and dental assessments to participating athletes.

Combat sports like karate carry a higher risk of orofacial injuries, and oral health has a direct bearing on an athlete’s nutrition, recovery, and performance — yet it remains one of the most under-addressed aspects of sports medicine in India. By stepping onto the championship grounds with their screening kits, KIDS aimed to change that, even in a small way.

This effort was carried forward in the spirit championed by Dr. Ashok Dhoble, Honorary Secretary General of the Indian Dental Association, a long-time advocate for embedding dentistry within the broader framework of sports medicine and athlete care nationwide. The camp also drew support from the Indian Academy of Sports Dentistry (IASD), the Sports Dental Centre, the Sports Authority of India (SAI), and Fit India — reflecting a growing, collective push toward making sports dentistry a mainstream part of athlete welfare in India.

A Message from the Director

Dr. Jugajyoti Pathi, Director, KIDS, shared his thoughts on the initiative:

“Oral health is often the last thing athletes think about — but it plays a direct role in performance, nutrition, and overall well-being. By bringing our team to the championship venue, KIDS and IDA wanted to show that preventive dental care doesn’t have to wait for a clinic visit. It can — and should — be part of an athlete’s everyday support system.”

A Shared Commitment to Holistic Care

The two-day initiative stands as a testament to what collaboration between academic institutions, professional dental bodies, and sporting federations can achieve. For KIDS, KIIT University, JKAWF India, and the IDA, the camp was more than a screening exercise. It was a statement of intent: that world-class sport and world-class healthcare belong together.

Nation Building Initiative by our Honorable Founder

The initiative also reflects the enduring vision of Honorable Prof. Dr. Achyuta Samanta — Founder KIIT, KIMS and KISS, an institution built on the principle of serving society through excellence in education, research, and care, extending KIDS’ clinical expertise from the campus to the wider sporting community.
