33rd Odisha State Annual Dental Conference Inaugurated in KIDS
33rd Odisha State Annual Dental Conference organized by Indian Dental Association (IDA), Temple City branch in association with KIIT University was inaugurated on Saturday in the premises of Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS). Inaugurating the conference, Dr. Damodar Rout, Minister, Cooperation & Excise, Govt. of Odisha said, various kinds of diseases including cardiac problem, diabetes and hypertension have been increased day by day due to rapid industrialization, urbanization and change of life style. The number of patients with heart disease and diabetes in India is very high in comparison to the global scenario. Particularly diabetes and cardiac problems are very high in young people below the age group of fifty. These diseases have effect on various oral and dental problems. So the dentists have a vital role to play in these cases. Doctors should follow professional ethics while they are practicing their profession. Doctors should be sentimental to the patient advices Dr. Rout. Dr. Ashis Kumar Barik, President, IDA, Odisha Chapter preside over the inaugural session. Oral Hygiene Day Observed at Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS)
Oral Hygiene Day was observed at Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS) on 1st August 2015, the birthday of Dr. Govind B. Shankwalkar, a true legend & Father of Indian Periodontia.. The programme was organized by the Department of Periodontics & Oral Implantology.
The Guest speakers of the programme were Dr. T. K. Pal, Principal, Prof. & Head, Department of Periodontics, Guru Nanak Institute of Dental Sciences & Research, Kolkata, Prof. Dr. A. K. Pal, Professor, Dept. of Periodontics and Community Dentistry, Burdwan Dental College & Hospital and Dr. Amitabh Panda, MD, National Oral Cancer Prevention Initiative (NOCPI). Prof. T. K. Pal spoke and discussed about “Oral Hygiene in Clinical Practice”. This was followed by Prof. A. K. Pal’s deliberation on “An Introduction to Oral Hygiene” and the last session by Dr Amitabh Panda on “Current Scenario of Oral Cancer in Odisha State & Role of Oral Hygiene”.

National Continuing Dental Education (CDE) Programme conducted at Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS)
National CDE program on “Current concepts in Oral Medicine and Radiology” was conducted at Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences on 13th June 2015by the Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology. The eminent speakers of the Lecture sessions were Dr. NGnanasundaram, Professor Emeritus, Sri Ramachandra Dental College, Chennai, Dr. Ashok L, Prof & Head, Dept of Oral Medicine & Radiology & Associate Dean, Bapuji Dental College, Davangere and Dr. M. K. Sunil, Prof& Head, Dept of Oral Medicine & Radiology, Guru Nanak Dev Dental College, Sunam. More than 250 delegates attended the National CDE program. Individual speakers delivered lectures on the recent advances in the field of oral medicine & radiology such as CBCT Imaging, Forensic Evolution and Diagnostic techniques. An inter-college quiz competition was also held by Dr. N Gnanasundaram at the end of the session. The First prize was shared by the students of Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS) & Institute of Dental Sciences (IDS), Bhubaneswar.

Orientation Programme for 2015 Postgraduate (MDS) students at Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences
The Orientation Programme for the Second Batch [2015-2018] Postgraduate (MDS) students was organized at Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS) on 8th June 2015. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Hon’ble Founder, KIIT and KISS. Other dignitaries present were Prof. Dr. R.C. Das, Principal, KIDS, Prof. Dr. Shruti Dev, Vice-Principal (Academics), KIDS, Prof. Dr. B.C.Das, Director, School of Medicine, Prof. Dr. S.B.Ogale, Principal, KIMS and Shri P. Parida, Management Representative, School of Medicine. Hon’ble Founder welcomed all the new students to the KIIT family and asked them to utilize the enormous facilities available at KIDS and KIIT for their study and research. The inauguration was followed by the orientation programme where Prof. Dr. R.C. Das, Principal & Chairman of Postgraduate Academic & Research Committee, Prof. Dr. Shruti Dev, Vice-Principal (Academics) & Vice- Chairman of Postgraduate Academic & Research Committee and Prof. Dr. B.N. Dutta, Head, Dept of Pedodontics & Preventive Dentistry, Member, Postgraduate Academic & Research Committee spoke about the various aspects of MDS programme. Dr. Shyam Sundar Behura, Convener, Postgraduate Academic & Research Committee briefed the students about the rules and regulations of MDS programme and the curriculum details.

“World No Tobacco day” observed at Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS)
The Programme was organized by the Dept. of Public Health Dentistry. The theme for this year was “STOP ILLICIT TRADE OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS”.A comic skit was performed by the Interns of 2010 batch in the slum area near Prasanti Vihar. The skit focused on the ill effects of tobacco use and oral cancer. The skit encouraged people to refrain using tobacco of any form. The skit was enacted in oriya for the better understanding of local people.
On the 1st of June 2015, a Lecture & Interactive Session was held in the auditorium of Kalinga Institute Of Dental Sciences. Guest speaker Dr. Ranjan Mohanty, a prominent Oncosurgeongave a lecture on “Tobacco and Oral Cancer” which illustrated the many facets of oral cancer caused by tobacco use. It was followed by the re-enactment of the skit for the audience.
World Oral Health Day observed at Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences

Mass Brushing Programme at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences
500 students of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) participated in the Mass brushing programme held as a part of World Oral Health Day observation on 20th March 2015. Students were first explained about proper brushing techniques with the help of models. They were also told about the importance of maintaining good oral health. Each of them were then given a set of Tooth brush, tooth paste and tongue cleaner with which all the students brushed their teeth under the supervision of the faculty members of KIDS.
Painting Competition at KISS
71 students participated in the painting competition organized by KIDS. The theme of the competition was “Oral Health”.
Patient Awareness through Banners and Posters
All specialty departments of KIDS prepared patient awareness banners which were displayed in the Reception area. Interns were deployed to explain the outpatients about the importance of oral health. Moreover, every department individually explained every patient about the importance of good oral health and various treatment modalities available to save their natural teeth. Patients were also shown oral self-examination procedures and asked to report to the dental surgeon whenever they see any danger signs. The importance of regular visit to a dental surgeon was also emphasized to every patient.
Free Oral Health Camp
Free Oral Health Camp was organized at two orphanages [Sri Sri Maa Ananda Ashram and Asha Kiran] in Bhubaneswar. Oral screening and scaling was done at both the centres. Tooth brushes and tooth pastes were distributed to all the children. They were also explained about the importance of maintaining good oral health.

Oral Health Awareness by IDA & KIDS
Indian Dental Association (IDA), State and Temple City Branch in association with Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS), KIIT University conducted oral health awareness programme at seven different schools of Bhubaneswar on 7th March 2015. On the occasion of Dentist’s Day, awareness was spread in the form of Oral Health talks, Interactive sessions with students and teachers and ways to maintain proper oral hygiene. The Schools involved were Sitanath High School, BDA colony UGUP Govt. School, Future Bhubaneswar School, Pathani Samanta Siksha Kendra, Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Mahima Gyana Mandir UP School and Alasua Primary School.
KIIT Inks MoU with Mayo Clinic & University of Milano-Bicocca
KIIT University signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mayo Clinic, USA on 15th January 2015. A nonprofit organization, Mayo Clinic is a global leader in medical care, research and education and has been recognized the best hospital in US. It has more than 3300 physicians, researchers and scientists.
As per the MoU, Mayo has agreed to pay KIIT University a multi-year grant for the purpose of development of educational infrastructure and completion of other support activities for five years. It is a recognition to KIIT’s excellence in science and education. This is the first time Mayo Clinic has signed MoU with any Indian university.
The MoU was signed by Dr. Sasmita Samanta, Registrar of KIIT University and Dr. Christopher K. Pierret of Mayo Clinic, in the presence of Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT University, Prof. P. P. Mathur, Vice Chancellor, Prof. D. K. Tripathy, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dr. Mrutyunjay Suar, Director of School of Biotechnology, KIIT and other officials of the two organizations.
In a related development, KIIT University also entered into agreement with the University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy. Dr. Sasmita Samanta, on behalf of KIIT, and Prof. Maria Cristina Messa, on behalf of University of Milano-Bicocca, signed the MoU. As per the agreement, the two universities would promote and strengthen scientific and academic cooperation by means of exchanging professors, researchers, students and staff. They would also undertake joint research activities and joint research doctoral theses.

Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS) observes WORLD AIDS DAY
Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS), KIIT University observed World AIDS Day on 1st December, 2014 with the theme of “Zero Discrimination and Achieving an AIDS Free Generation”. The morning session was dedicated for “Awareness” with a Theme Dance, a musical drama and a video on Public opinion on AIDS & People living with AIDS. The evening was dedicated for the Nukkad Natak (Street Play) in front of Big Bazaar, Patia performed by the students of KIDS. The street play was planned to create awareness among the public about HIV infection and AIDS. The play also concentrated on the Theme of “Zero Discrimination” where it was showed how to end stigma and promote support and compassion in the society. The entire event was observed by a huge number of people. In the evening, all the students of KIDS joined in for a “Remembrance Walk” and “Candle Light Vigil” to honour those lives lost to AIDS and to remember those living with HIV infection and AIDS.
KIDS conducted Two day Seminar on Immunohistochemistry
The Department of Oral Pathology, Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS), KIIT University, Bhubaneswar conducted IHC-TECH 2014, a two day Seminar and Hands-On Workshop on Immunohistochemistry (IHC) on 22nd and 23rd August 2014. The event is first of its kind in the state of Odisha to be conducted by any dental college. The programme was inaugurated by Prof. P. P. Mathur, Vice Chancellor, KIIT University in the presence of Prof. Dr. B.C Das, Director School of Medicine, KIIT University, Prof. Dr. R.C. Das, Principal KIDS, Prof. Dr. A. Banerjee, Organizing Chairman and Dr. Harish Kumar, Organizing Secretary. The first day consisted of lecture sessions and case discussions by two eminent Oral Pathologists Dr. Rudrayya Shivanand Puranik, from PMNM Dental College and Hospital, Bagalkot, Karnataka and Dr. Jyoti Dilip Bhavtankar from Govt. Dental College, Aurangabad. A total of 150 delegates consisting of postgraduate students, faculties and Interns from different dental colleges of Odisha and other places such as Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, Pondicherry and Bagalkot attended the seminar. The entire second day was dedicated for the Hands-On Workshop on Immunohistochemistry Techniques, where all participants performed the entire procedure of IHC supervised by Dr. Abikshyeet Panda, Dr. Shyam Sundar Behura, Dr. Sujatha R, Dr. Kiran Kumar Mishra, the faculties of department of Oral Pathology, KIDS and technical professionals from Biogenex. Moreover, KIDS became the first dental college of Odisha to set up an Immunohistochemistry Laboratory under the department of Oral Pathology.
KIDS conducted Workshop on “Advanced Endodontics – with Retreatment”
A workshop on “Advanced Endodontics – with Retreatment” has been conducted by Kalinga Institute of Dental sciences (KIDS) a sister concern of KIIT University in association with with Indian Dental Association (IDA) – Temple city branch. The speaker of the day was Dr. Ajit A Shaligram, an eminent Endodontist from Mumbai. In the first session, he spoke extensively about advancements in Root Canal Treatment with specific emphasis on endodontic retreatment and retrieval of broken instruments. The second session was for the workshop where delegates performed various Root Canal procedures under his guidance. A total of 130 delegates consisting of general practitioners, specialists and students from various Dental Colleges of Odisha were participated in the workshop. The program was very informative and was a great success.
KIDS & NOCPI Organize ORACON-2014
ORACON-2014 an exclusive oral cancer related conference and 2nd conference in the ORACON series was conducted on World Cancer Day 4 within the campus of Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS) of KIIT University. The conference was organized by National Oral Cancer Prevention Initiative (NOCPI) a national level organization working actively in the field of oral cancer and under the initiatives of UBA Foundation. The conference was supported by Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS), KIIT University, Bhubaneswar.
The conference started with the flagging off the Road Show regarding Oral Cancer conducted by the students of Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences. The road show covered different areas of Bhubaneswar such as Vanivihar, Master canteen square, The World Square and distributed about 5000 oral cancer awareness leaflets.
The inaugural programme at KIDS was graced by eminent oncosurgeon Dr. Madhabananda Kar and eminent Oral & Maxillofacial Pathologist Prof. Dr. Bijay Kumar Das in the presence of Dr Ramesh Ch Das, Principal KIDS and Patron of ORACON-2014.
The conference was attended by doctors from both medical and dental section where discussions were held regarding the current status of Oral Cancer in the state of Odisha and the possible ways to control it. A Panel discussion on Oral Cancer was also held where doctors interacted with eminent academicians and practitioners.
At the end of the function a CANQUIZ, an Oral cancer based Quiz competition was conducted and CANACT, a cultural programme reflecting social values of oral cancer was performed by dental students of KIDS.
